Japan becomes the fourth global customer to adopt the advanced Block II configuration, enhancing its military airlift capability.
Philadelphia, 13 February 2025 – The Japan Self-Defence Forces (JSDF) has placed an order for 17 Boeing CH-47JA Block II Chinook Extended Range helicopters, marking a significant step in modernising its heavy-lift fleet. This acquisition will replace part of Japan’s existing CH-47JA fleet, reinforcing the country’s strategic air mobility and operational efficiency.
The aircraft will be co-produced by Boeing and Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI), continuing a long-standing partnership that has delivered over 100 Chinooks to Japan since the 1980s. This collaboration represents one of the most successful licensed manufacturing programmes in the country’s defence sector.
A Strategic Leap in Heavy-Lift Capability
“This award strengthens our decades-long relationship with KHI and provides critical capability improvements that will keep the Japan Self-Defence Forces operating heavy-lift aircraft for decades to come,” said Heather McBryan, Vice President and Program Manager for Boeing Cargo Programs.
- The CH-47JA Block II Chinook is the latest evolution of the legendary heavy-lift helicopter, integrating:
