UK ELECTRIC AIR TAXI SERVICE TAKES FLIGHT WITH JOBY AND VIRGIN ATLANTIC PARTNERSHIP

London, UK & Santa Cruz, CA – March 16, 2025. The future of urban mobility in the UK is set for a revolutionary shift as Joby Aviation partners with Virgin Atlantic to introduce an all-electric air taxi service. This strategic collaboration promises zero-emission, short-range travel solutions, enhancing connectivity for Virgin Atlantic passengers while setting a new standard for sustainable air transport.

A New Era of Air Mobility

The partnership builds on Joby’s existing agreement with Delta Air Lines, which holds a 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic. This expansion brings together brands recognized for their commitment to innovation and exceptional customer service. With Joby’s electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, passengers will soon have access to a fast, seamless, and eco-friendly transportation alternative.

Seamless Connectivity Across the UK

Initially, the service will connect regional and urban destinations from Virgin Atlantic’s key hubs at Heathrow and Manchester Airport. Joby’s aircraft, capable of carrying a pilot and four passengers at speeds up to 200 mph, will significantly reduce travel times. For instance, journeys such as Manchester to Leeds could take just 15 minutes, while Heathrow to Canary Wharf could be completed in 8 minutes, compared to the current 80-minute car journey.

Virgin Atlantic will play a crucial role in supporting Joby’s UK launch by:

  • Marketing the air taxi service to customers
  • Engaging with regulatory bodies
  • Developing infrastructure at key airport locations

Leadership Perspective

Shai Weiss, CEO of Virgin Atlantic, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative:

“As a leader in sustainability and with innovation in our DNA, we are delighted to partner with Joby to introduce zero-emission air mobility solutions across the UK. Combining Joby’s cutting-edge technology with Virgin Atlantic’s award-winning customer experience will redefine urban air travel.”

JoeBen Bevirt, Founder and CEO of Joby, added:

“Virgin Atlantic’s reputation for excellence and its dedication to customer satisfaction align perfectly with our mission. We are committed to delivering faster, more efficient mobility options for travellers across the UK.”

Sustainable, Efficient, and Quiet Air Travel

Joby’s aircraft features six tilting propellers for vertical takeoff and landing, operating with a fraction of the noise produced by helicopters. With extensive testing, including flights in New York City, Japan, and Korea, Joby is well-positioned to introduce a reliable eVTOL network in the UK. The company envisions a future where a network of air taxi routes supports efficient, rapid transit for cities and communities across the country.

Affordable and Accessible

Joby aims to launch its services with pricing comparable to premium ground ridesharing options, ensuring accessibility for a broad range of travellers. The partnership with Virgin Atlantic follows Joby’s successful 2024 Farnborough International Airshow debut and the company’s ongoing aircraft certification process with the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

This partnership signals a significant step towards the future of sustainable aviation, positioning the UK as a leader in zero-emission air transport solutions.
