NAIROBI, Kenya – 24 May 2025 — Kenya Airways has reaffirmed its commitment to African sports with the announcement of a new partnership with the Kenya Rugby Union, returning as the official sponsor of the Simbas, Kenya’s Men’s 15s national rugby team. The announcement was made during a signing ceremony at the RFUEA Grounds on Ngong Road, just ahead of the Simbas’ crucial warm-up match against the UAE national team.
As the designated official airline partner for the Rugby World Cup season, Kenya Airways will provide an in-kind sponsorship valued at KES 15 million over the next 12 months. This significant contribution is aimed at bolstering the team’s preparations and elevating the profile of Kenyan rugby on the global stage.
Julius Thairu, Chief Customer and Commercial Officer of Kenya Airways, highlighted the airline’s pride in the renewed alliance.
“This collaboration is rooted in shared values of teamwork, tenacity, and transformation—the spirit that defines rugby and our journey as the Pride of Africa,” said Thairu. “This demonstrates our dedication to uplifting local talent and empowering African champions to rise.”
Kenya Rugby Union Chairman, Mr. Sasha Mutai, welcomed the partnership with optimism. “We are excited to have Kenya Airways as the main sponsor of the Kenya 15s national rugby team, the Simbas. Their support will not only go a long way in helping make the Kenya Simbas a rugby power globally, but also contribute to our shared mission of raising the Kenya flag high.”
The timing of the sponsorship is critical, as the Simbas prepare for upcoming World Cup qualifiers. Kenya Airways’ backing is expected to give the national side the momentum it needs as it eyes a spot in the coveted global tournament.
Over the years, Kenyan rugby has flourished—particularly in the Sevens format—earning the country a place among Africa’s elite rugby nations. As a long-standing supporter of sports, Kenya Airways continues to invest in African excellence and national pride, reinforcing its legacy as more than just an airline but a champion of continental talent.
