VIPER SHIELD™: THE SMART ELECTRONIC WARFARE SOLUTION FOR THE GLOBAL F-16 FLEET

L3Harris Technologies is rapidly advancing its Viper Shield™ electronic warfare suite – the only fully funded, in-production, and variant-agnostic solution tailored to meet the modern-day combat requirements of F-16 operators worldwide.

With its production hardware configuration already undergoing flight testing, and Safety of Flight testing underway for its next software iteration, Viper Shield is demonstrating tangible progress on all fronts. It is the only EW system for the F-16 fleet that is fully backed through development, placing it well ahead of the competition.

Advanced Protection Across Variants

A standout attribute of Viper Shield is its seamless integration across multiple F-16 configurations. Whether fitted internally into the Block 70/72 jets or retrofitted via a podded solution for older Block 40 and Block 50 variants, including D-models, the system delivers cutting-edge protection without requiring airframe redesign.

The podded variant uses the same Line Replaceable Units (LRUs), simplifying maintenance and ensuring full-spectrum EW capabilities across both internal and external installations. This high adaptability puts Viper Shield three to five years ahead of alternative systems on the market.

Strong Global Backing

The programme’s robustness is further reinforced by full funding and strong international partnership. Currently backed by six nations—with more expected to sign on in 2025—the system has gained impressive global traction.

“This strong financial support and the substantial number of orders underscore the confidence and trust placed in Viper Shield’s capabilities,” said Ed Zoiss, President of Space and Airborne Systems at L3Harris. “Our competitors simply cannot match this level of readiness and support for the global F-16 fleet.”

Testing Under Operational Stress

Flight testing began in January 2025 with a single-seat Block 70 F-16, marking a major milestone in the system’s development. Viper Shield is also undergoing rigorous environmental qualification in an anechoic chamber to verify its resilience and performance across operational environments.

Built as a fully digital, software-defined system, Viper Shield benefits from spiral software development, allowing the L3Harris team to refine enhancements even as production scales up for existing orders.

Production Ramping Up

Units have been in production for nearly a year, and L3Harris is now scaling manufacturing operations to meet the surging global demand. Designed to equip fighter pilots with next-generation digital protection against modern threats, Viper Shield’s production timeline and delivery schedule reflect the company’s commitment to operational excellence.

As nations invest in next-generation defence capabilities, Viper Shield stands out as the proven, future-ready choice for safeguarding the global F-16 fleet.
