At AEROSA 2025, World Airnews sat down with Yvette Le Grange from Mayday South Africa, a voluntary peer support network dedicated to licensed aviators dealing with emotional, psychological, or professional stress.
Founded in 2013 following the Albatross aircraft crash, Mayday has grown into a trusted, independent support system offering confidential, non-judgmental help to those in need. “We’re not affiliated with airlines or institutions,” explained Yvette. “That independence ensures aviators feel safe when they reach out.”
The challenges faced by pilots and aviation professionals often go unnoticed—long hours, missed family events, and high-stress environments can lead to emotional strain. Mayday steps in with peer supporters who are active members of the aviation industry and trained to listen and support.
If further assistance is needed, Mayday gently refers individuals to mental health professionals—always with respect and full confidentiality. “Our role isn’t to diagnose or fix,” said Yvette, “but to listen and walk beside someone until they’re ready for more help—if they want it.”
To contact Mayday South Africa, visit www.mayday-sa.org.za, call the helpline on +27 12 333 6000 and ask for Mayday, or email support@mayday-sa.org.za. Whether on the ground or in the sky, no aviator needs to face tough times alone.
