MISSION AVIATION FELLOWSHIP: FLYING HOPE TO ISOLATED CORNERS

At AEROSA 2025, World Airnews caught up with Sean Richter, Recruitment Officer for Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) South Africa, to learn how this global Christian aviation organisation is using aircraft to reach the unreachable—bringing hope, healing, and help to some of the most isolated communities in the world.

Operating nearly 140 aircraft in over 30 countries, MAF serves as a vital link for humanitarian, medical, and faith-based organisations that require rapid and safe access to remote areas. Based out of Sandton, Johannesburg, Sean focuses on expanding MAF’s reach across Africa, particularly within the SADC region.

“We don’t just fly missionaries,” said Sean. “We fly aid workers, medical teams, logistics personnel—anyone committed to making a difference.” MAF is actively recruiting not only pilots and engineers, but also HR professionals, operations managers, safety officers, and administrators—proving that anyone with a heart to serve can be part of the mission.

Joining MAF involves a structured six-phase process, beginning with a CV submission and a set of personal and spiritual reflection questions. “We want candidates to reflect on whether they align with our mission,” Sean explained. For those joining as volunteers, fundraising is part of the commitment, but MAF provides tools and training to support that journey.

Looking ahead, MAF plans to establish regional hubs across Africa to manage recruitment, logistics, and donor engagement—each ideally led by local professionals to foster ownership and sustainability.

“This isn’t just about flying,” said Sean. “It’s about transforming lives. Where the road ends, our work begins.”
