GIVING VOICE TO AVIATION WORKERS: THE ROLE OF AUSA IN A CHANGING INDUSTRY

Amid the energy and exchange of ideas at AEROSA 2025, World Airnews sat down with Jacques Krige, General Secretary of the Aviation Union of South Africa (AUSA), to explore how the union is evolving to meet the demands of a post-COVID aviation industry.

Founded in 1996 to represent workers at SAA Technical, AUSA has grown to serve a wide spectrum of aviation professionals—from pilots and cabin crew to ground technicians and logistics staff. “Aviation changed dramatically after COVID,” said Krige. “We had to change with it. Today, we represent workers across the entire sector.”

At its core, AUSA offers representation and protection. Members receive assistance with grievances, CCMA cases, unfair dismissals, legal representation, and more. Krige emphasised that many issues go beyond employment law and touch on ethics and safety—like pressure to use substandard aircraft parts or toxic work environments.

“When safety is compromised, we step in. Our role is to protect the worker, but also to educate employers. We’re not here to break businesses—we want them to succeed, because that’s what sustains jobs,” he explained.

AUSA’s independence allows it to represent workers impartially, without political interference. The union also plays an active role in regulatory consultations with the SA Civil Aviation Authority, often being the only voice for frontline workers like technicians and ground crew.

On challenges like business closures and whistleblower protections, AUSA provides careful guidance. “We support whistleblowers and try to resolve issues without collateral damage,” Krige said. “But we also advocate for better engagement to prevent crises in the first place.”

Krige’s message to the industry is clear: “AUSA is here to stabilise, grow, and give voice to those who keep aviation flying. This isn’t just about jobs today—it’s about building a better future.”
