Rolls-Royce has announced that China Airlines has signed TotalCare service agreements covering 36 Trent XWB engines that will power new Airbus A350 aircraft joining the carrier’s fleet.

The agreement includes support for 30 Trent XWB-97 engines and six Trent XWB-84 engines. These engines will power 15 Airbus A350-1000 aircraft and three A350-900 aircraft respectively. The A350-1000 aircraft order was previously announced by Airbus in 2025.

China Airlines currently operates 15 Trent XWB-powered A350 aircraft. With the addition of the new aircraft, the airline’s total A350 fleet will increase to 33 aircraft.

Under the agreement, China Airlines will continue to use Rolls-Royce’s TotalCare service, which covers engine health monitoring and maintenance support. The service is designed to provide operational certainty by transferring time-on-wing and maintenance cost risk to Rolls-Royce. The programme is supported by advanced engine health monitoring systems intended to improve operational availability, reliability and efficiency.

According to Rolls-Royce, the Trent XWB-97 has accumulated more than four million flying hours across more than seven years of service. The engine has already received two of three planned durability enhancement phases. These enhancements are delivering a reported 60% increase in time on wing. A third phase, scheduled to enter service in 2028, is expected to further improve time on wing performance, including in challenging operating environments.

Rolls-Royce states that the Trent XWB engine family is designed to deliver fuel efficiency, reliability and durability for long-haul operations.
