Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has reported strong operational performance across its airport network during the 2025 peak travel period, with passenger volumes showing continued recovery towards pre-pandemic levels. The network processed 4,013,823 passengers in December 2025, representing 98 per cent recovery to pre-pandemic traffic and an 8 per cent year-on-year increase.
The performance was supported by the return of key international routes, new airline entrants and increased flight frequencies across the network.
Peak period operational performance
The network recorded its busiest day on 12 December 2025, processing 143,135 passengers and 1,352 air traffic movements. O.R. Tambo International Airport, Cape Town International Airport and King Shaka International Airport all exceeded traffic projections during the period.
ACSA reported that infrastructure performance remained stable during the peak period, supported by resource planning that enabled the network to accommodate increased passenger and aircraft volumes. Operational disruptions, including weather-related events, were managed to minimise passenger impact.
On-Time performance metrics
Average On-Time Performance (OTP) across the network was recorded at 77.5 per cent against a target of 88.5 per cent. The variance was attributed primarily to external factors, including severe weather conditions in Europe affecting inbound international aircraft.
Domestic flight OTP averaged 79 per cent, while international flight OTP averaged 71 per cent.
Traffic outlook and financial recovery
ACSA expects passenger traffic in South Africa to continue recovering towards 2019 levels. The company noted that overall financial stability across the aviation sector has improved, supported by a recovery in profitability.
ACSA expects continued demand in the travel sector and projects further growth in passenger and cargo volumes in the FY 2026/27 financial year. Anticipated drivers include expansion of international routes, the introduction of new airlines and continued operational performance improvements.
Network growth and infrastructure focus
Record passenger numbers were recorded in 2025 at several airports. Cape Town International Airport processed 11,113,490 passengers, while George Airport processed 911,354 passengers.
Looking ahead, ACSA plans continued investment in infrastructure upgrades, digital systems and operational improvements to support anticipated traffic growth and maintain passenger service standards across the network.
ACSA also acknowledged the contribution of employees, airline partners, ground handlers, fuel suppliers and passengers in supporting network operations during the peak period.
