AviaDev has announced that Aaron Munetsi, Chief Executive Officer of the Airlines Association of Southern Africa (AASA), will receive the Ato Girma Wake Lifetime Achievement Award at AviaDev Africa 2026.
The award recognises his contribution to route development and aviation connectivity across Africa, reflecting a career spanning nearly four decades in the industry.
RECOGNITION OF INDUSTRY CONTRIBUTION
According to AviaDev, the award honours individuals whose careers have had a significant impact on the development of aviation on the continent. It is named after Ato Girma Wake, a prominent figure in African aviation.
Munetsi is recognised for his role in advancing airline partnerships, route development and regional connectivity across Africa.
CAREER IN AIRLINE OPERATIONS AND NETWORK DEVELOPMENT
During his career, Munetsi spent more than 20 years with South African Airways, holding senior leadership roles across Africa and the Middle East. His responsibilities included network expansion and the development of airline partnerships.
According to the organisers, his work included involvement in the establishment of international and intra-African routes, as well as cooperation agreements between airlines operating across the continent.
ROLE AT AASA
As Chief Executive Officer of AASA, Munetsi represents member airlines on regulatory and policy matters and works with governments and industry stakeholders on issues relating to connectivity and competitiveness.
The association stated that his role includes supporting collaboration across the aviation sector and addressing structural challenges affecting airline operations in the region.
AWARD PRESENTATION
The award will be presented during AviaDev Africa 2026, where Munetsi is expected to participate in a discussion on aviation development and connectivity across the continent.
Previous recipients of the award include senior industry figures from African airlines, regulatory bodies and aviation organisations.
