U.S. ARMY NAMES FLRAA AIRCRAFT MV-75 CHEYENNE II

The U.S. Army has officially named its Future Long Range Assault Aircraft the MV-75 Cheyenne II, marking a key step in next-generation vertical lift development.

OFFICIAL DESIGNATION CONFIRMED

The U.S. Army has officially designated its Future Long Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA) as the MV-75 Cheyenne II, marking a key milestone in the programme’s development.

Announced by Bell Textron Inc., the designation follows the Army’s 2025 confirmation of the Mission Design Series (MDS) “MV-75”, where “MV” denotes a multi-mission vertical take-off aircraft and “75” references the Army’s founding year, 1775.

The name “Cheyenne II” continues the U.S. Army’s tradition of recognising Native American tribes, honouring both the Northern Cheyenne Tribe of Montana and the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma.

NEXT-GENERATION ASSAULT CAPABILITY

The MV-75 Cheyenne II is being developed as the U.S. Army’s next-generation long-range assault platform, designed to deliver improved speed, range, and operational flexibility compared to current rotorcraft.

According to programme officials, the aircraft is intended to provide commanders with enhanced options for rapid force deployment while reducing exposure in contested environments. Its modular open systems architecture is designed to support future upgrades as operational requirements evolve.

LEGACY AND SYMBOLISM

The Cheyenne II designation also references the legacy of the AH-56 Cheyenne, an earlier high-speed rotorcraft programme, while signalling a new phase of innovation in Army aviation.

Programme leadership noted that the name reflects qualities associated with the Cheyenne people, including adaptability, resilience, and operational effectiveness in challenging environments.

PROGRAMME PROGRESSION

Bell Textron Inc. confirmed that development of the MV-75 remains on schedule, with the programme progressing toward the delivery of its first test aircraft.

The naming milestone reflects continued alignment between the U.S. Army and industry partners as the FLRAA programme advances toward operational capability.

STRATEGIC CONTEXT

The MV-75 Cheyenne II is expected to play a central role in the Army’s future vertical lift strategy, replacing legacy platforms with a system capable of operating over longer distances and in more complex operational environments.

Its development forms part of a broader effort to modernise U.S. Army aviation capabilities in response to evolving mission requirements.
