Ethiopia’s air passenger demand is expected to triple by 2044, with IATA calling for continued investment in infrastructure, skills and sustainability.
Infrastructure, training and sustainability identified as key to long-term aviation growth
ADDIS ABABA — The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has projected that Ethiopia’s air passenger demand will triple by 2044, underscoring the need for continued investment in aviation infrastructure, skills development, and sustainability.
AVIATION CONTRIBUTION TO ECONOMIC GROWTH
Aviation already plays a significant role in Ethiopia’s economy, supporting approximately USD 2 billion in economic activity, equivalent to 1.2% of GDP, and contributing to more than 527,000 jobs across the aviation value chain.
Air cargo also remains a critical component of connectivity, with nearly 250,000 tonnes handled, supporting trade and supply chain integration.
DEMAND GROWTH DRIVEN BY DEMOGRAPHICS AND DEVELOPMENT
The projected growth in passenger demand reflects broader demographic and economic trends, including a young population and expanding connectivity requirements.
With around 60% of the population under the age of 25, aviation is positioned as a key enabler of employment, skills development, and economic participation over the coming decades.
INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT A KEY PRIORITY
IATA highlighted the importance of cost-efficient infrastructure development, particularly in relation to Ethiopia’s planned new airport at Bishoftu.
Early coordination with airlines and stakeholders, including Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) planning, will be critical to ensuring efficient and safe capacity expansion aligned with demand growth.
BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE AVIATION WORKFORCE
Investment in training and education remains central to supporting long-term sector growth.
Institutions such as Ethiopian Aviation University were identified as key contributors to developing the skilled workforce required across flight operations, engineering, and ground services.
ALIGNING GROWTH WITH SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainability was highlighted as a core component of Ethiopia’s aviation strategy.
The country has the potential to participate in global carbon markets through CORSIA, with an estimated 16.1 million eligible emission units available in the near term. Leveraging these mechanisms could support both environmental targets and economic returns.
LONG-TERM OUTLOOK
IATA emphasised that continued government prioritisation of aviation will be essential to sustaining growth and maximising its contribution to the national economy.
With strong demand fundamentals and strategic investment, Ethiopia is positioned to further strengthen its role as a key aviation hub within Africa and the broader global network.
