ACSA SIGNALS AN EXCITING CHAPTER OF CONTINENT-WIDE AIRLIFT AND THE ROLE OF AfCFTA AT THE TRAVEL INDABA 

The 2024 Africa Travel Indaba convened to deliberate on how airlift will serve as a dynamic catalyst for Africa’s economic development, tourism growth, and regional integration.

Ms. Mpumi Mpofu, CEO of Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), graced the event, participating on the 2024 Africa Travel Indaba panel alongside esteemed industry figures like CemAir’s Chief Commercial Officer Shaniel Singh and Tebogo Fihla from Kenya Airways.


Africa’s Travel Indaba stands as a cornerstone event on the continent’s tourism calendar, ranking among the top three “must visit” events globally. It offers a platform to showcase Africa’s diverse tourism offerings and draws international buyers and media from across the globe.


The panel discussions, held on Monday, 13th May 2024, at the Durban ICC, delved into understanding and addressing the emerging and historical challenges surrounding airlift strategies within Africa. Despite the disruptions caused by COVID-19, notable advancements in airlift have unfolded across the African continent.


Participants explored the exciting trends and opportunities aimed at bolstering travel numbers. Notably, discussions underscored the significance of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement, which is shaping a conducive environment for air travel, both for passengers and cargo.


The Africa Travel Indaba serves as an annual platform for aviation industry stakeholders to collaborate on solutions to pressing challenges. In addition to the panel discussions, the event hosted a Business Opportunity Networking Day (BONDay), featuring carefully curated educational sessions where industry trends were examined in depth.


Deputy Minister of Tourism Amos Fish Mahlalela concluded the event with a keynote address, encapsulating the collective aspirations and commitments towards advancing Africa’s tourism and aviation sectors.


The 2024 Africa Travel Indaba illuminated a promising path forward for the continent’s airlift industry, highlighting the pivotal role it plays in driving economic growth, fostering tourism development, and enhancing regional integration.
