Investing in mathematics education

The AAD Youth Foundation has concluded a three-day Mathematics Summit Educator Programme designed to enhance mathematics teaching at Foundation Phase level by equipping educators with practical teaching strategies and subject-specific expertise.

Held from 19 to 21 June at the Eskom Academy of Learning, the programme brought together 15 Foundation Phase educators from the SediWes District to exchange best practices and strengthen numeracy instruction through collaborative learning and professional development.

Strengthening classroom practice

The programme focused on improving mathematics teaching methodologies through interactive workshops, practical demonstrations and collaborative discussions.

Facilitators from the South African Military Academy, Vaal University of Technology and Durban University of Technology guided participants through approaches aimed at building learner confidence and improving mathematics outcomes at an early stage of education.

AAD Youth Foundation Chairperson Kholisile Khumalo said investing in educators is central to achieving long-term educational transformation and encouraging greater enthusiasm for mathematics among young learners.

Supporting the future aviation workforce

Although centred on mathematics education, the initiative aligns closely with the Foundation’s broader commitment to developing future capability in Science, Technology, Aviation, Engineering and Mathematics (STEAM).

Chief Director for the SediWes Region, Buyisile Victor Thetha, said the programme was built around seven objectives aimed at strengthening curriculum understanding, improving teaching practices and enabling participants to share knowledge with fellow educators.

Building South Africa’s skills pipeline

For the aerospace and defence sectors, programmes such as this highlight the long-term importance of investing in STEM education to develop the skilled workforce required by future high-technology industries.

The AAD Youth Foundation says it intends to continue expanding initiatives that promote educational excellence, strengthen educator capacity and contribute to South Africa’s future talent pipeline through sustained investment in STEAM education.
