AIR ALGÉRIE EXPANDS REGIONAL FLEET WITH RECORD ATR ORDER

In a decisive move to boost regional air connectivity and strengthen sustainable operations, Air Algérie has placed a landmark order for 16 brand new ATR 72-600 aircraft – the largest order from an African operator in ATR’s history. This strategic acquisition reinforces the two-decade-long relationship between the national carrier and the world’s leading turboprop aircraft manufacturer.

As ATR’s largest customer on the African continent, Air Algérie has been operating ATR aircraft since 2003, with prior deliveries in 2008 and 2014. The airline currently operates 12 ATR 72-500s and three ATR 72-600s. With the latest order, the Algerian flag carrier continues its commitment to providing reliable, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible regional air transport.

The new aircraft, equipped with the latest generation PW127XT engines, will be delivered between 2026 and 2028. Configured with 72 seats, the ATR 72-600s will be operated by a newly established regional subsidiary of Air Algérie – Domestic Airlines – with a specific mandate to enhance air connectivity across Algeria, especially in the southern and remote regions where air access plays a critical role in driving economic and social development.

Adding to this significant fleet expansion, the order includes an ATR 72-600 full-flight simulator – the first of its kind on the African continent. It will be installed at Air Algérie’s training centre, further advancing the airline’s operational safety, pilot training, and maintenance capabilities.

Hamza Benhamouda, Chief Executive Officer of Air Algérie, stated:
“The ATR 72-600 is the right aircraft to help us connect all regions of our country and support national development through reliable and efficient air transport. Its performance on short and thin routes makes it an essential part of our strategy while its fuel efficiency also supports our goal of reducing emissions and building more sustainable operations. By investing in this new fleet and the first ATR 72-600 simulator in Africa, we are also reinforcing our commitment to regional connectivity, operational excellence, and the future of regional aviation in Algeria.”

ATR CEO Nathalie Tarnaud Laude added:
“This order is a powerful endorsement of the ATR 72-600’s capabilities and the value it brings to foster regional connectivity. With its exceptionally low operating costs, fuel efficiency, and ability to perform reliably in diverse and demanding environments like the Algerian climate, the ATR 72-600 is uniquely suited for low-density routes and remote regions.”

This major order signals a new chapter in Algerian aviation and a continued vote of confidence in ATR’s aircraft. As Air Algérie launches its new subsidiary, ATR remains a key partner – not just in delivering state-of-the-art aircraft, but also in supporting the development of infrastructure, training, and sustainable air operations across the region.
