In the skies above the Atlas Mountains, the French Air and Space Force has paired two of Airbus’s most capable aircraft for unprecedented operational versatility. The A400M Atlas heavy transport aircraft and the H225M Caracal helicopter are now fully compatible for in-flight refuelling, a capability formally approved in early 2025.
The H225M, renowned for special operations and combat search-and-rescue missions, benefits from extended range through in-flight refuelling, allowing flights exceeding 10 hours. Its versatility, combined with the A400M’s proven global transport and medevac capabilities, provides the Air Force with unmatched projection power.
Achieving helicopter refuelling in flight required months of rigorous testing, beginning in June 2023 with preliminary trials and followed by campaigns in February and March 2024. The final validation in early 2025 authorised full operational use, with five helicopter refuelling kits planned for adaptation to the A400M fleet.
“Imagine an aircraft with a maximum weight of 140 tonnes flying close to its stall speed of 110 knots to match a helicopter’s speed,” said Lieutenant Colonel Nicolas, A400M officer for the French Air and Space Force. Airbus updated the A400M’s electronic flight controls and adapted refuelling pods to make this feat possible.
This partnership was demonstrated successfully during Exercise Athena in May 2025, proving that the Atlas–Caracal duo can be rapidly deployed anywhere in the world, supporting operations from commandos to pilot recovery deep behind enemy lines.
