AIRBUS AND MISTRAL AI FORM PARTNERSHIP FOR AEROSPACE AI APPLICATIONS

Airbus has signed a partnership agreement with Mistral AI to expand the use of artificial intelligence across commercial aviation, defence and space applications.

Collaboration aims to expand the use of artificial intelligence across commercial, defence and space programmes

PARIS – Airbus has signed a partnership agreement with European artificial intelligence company Mistral AI to expand the use of AI technologies across its aerospace operations, products and services. The agreement is intended to support Airbus’ digital transformation strategy while maintaining security, sovereignty and regulatory requirements across civil and military applications.

According to Airbus, the partnership will support the deployment of artificial intelligence across its commercial aircraft, helicopter, defence and space activities, with a focus on trusted and responsible AI solutions.

Supporting industrial and engineering applications

Under the agreement, Airbus will acquire licences for Mistral AI’s product suite, enabling the deployment of AI models in on-premises environments, trusted cloud platforms and other operational settings. The partnership also provides Airbus with access to Mistral AI researchers and opportunities to contribute to future product development.

The companies have identified several areas where AI technologies could be applied, including the automation of technical documentation processes for commercial aircraft and helicopters, as well as engineering support during development, testing and certification activities.

Airbus stated that AI-driven simulations could also be used to assist with aircraft component optimisation and design processes, potentially supporting faster engineering cycles and product development.

Exploring future aerospace applications

The collaboration will also examine the use of AI models onboard aircraft and spacecraft. Potential applications include automatic object recognition and other edge AI capabilities designed to enhance situational awareness and support operational safety functions.

In the defence sector, the partnership will explore highly secure AI deployments for military applications, including cyber investigations and software development support tools.

European focus on sovereign AI

Airbus said the agreement aligns with its objective of integrating advanced artificial intelligence into aerospace operations while maintaining sovereignty and security requirements for critical and highly confidential applications.

The partnership reflects growing interest within the aerospace sector in the use of AI technologies to support industrial efficiency, engineering innovation, operational decision-making and future platform capabilities.
