With more than 3,000 helicopters flying emergency medical missions globally—over half of them Airbus-built—it’s no surprise that the H135 has become a trusted platform in Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS). But with the unveiling of the new H140, Airbus aims to redefine the benchmark.
Built with insight from the world’s leading EMS operators, the H140 is purpose-driven, modular, and crafted to meet real-world mission demands. At its heart lies a commitment to the crews who dedicate their lives to saving others.
Tailored From Experience
“The H140 really reflects what the customer requires,” says Stefan Bestle, H140 Marketing Product Manager and Airbus Key Segment Manager for HEMS missions. Bestle spearheaded a development process grounded in dialogue—with extensive workshops and interviews capturing the voices of frontline medical professionals.
The result? A helicopter with a long, wide, and tall cabin—offering both space and agility. “It’s not just about making the biggest cabin,” says Bestle. “A compact design still matters. We believe we’ve achieved the perfect balance.”
Innovating the Medical Cabin
Access and ergonomics came next. The H140’s modular cabin offers operators a choice of stretcher positions, even enabling two stretchers when needed. The design supports a variety of patient-loading requirements, from CPR devices to stretcher bridges with upright medical equipment.
Key to this improvement is the redesigned rear access. The raised tail boom and the elimination of the horizontal stabiliser make loading safer and simpler. “The straightedge loading edge is more comfortable and safe,” Bestle adds, noting the enhanced lighting systems that support both internal and external operations.
A True Turnkey Solution
Beyond the cabin, Airbus is developing a fixed provision concept—streamlining how EMS helicopters are equipped and delivered. “We’re looking holistically at the overall equipped aircraft,” Bestle explains. By integrating modular mechanical and electrical HEMS systems, Airbus aims to reduce both aircraft weight and installation time.
“The objective is for everything to be installed in our facilities,” says Bestle. “The customer receives a helicopter fully-equipped for EMS.”
With the H140, Airbus has taken a bold step forward—shaped by those who know the mission best.
