Boeing’s 777-9 flight training simulators have received initial qualification from the FAA and EASA, marking a key step towards regulator-approved pilot training at Gatwick.
FAA and EASA approve simulator devices for airline pilot training
GATWICK, United Kingdom, February 19, 2026 – Boeing (NYSE: BA) 777-9 flight training simulators have received initial qualification following the issue of simulator qualification certificates by the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
The approvals mark a further step towards regulator-approved pilot training for the 777-9.
Capt. Gary Mandy, 777X chief technical pilot, described the approvals as an important milestone ahead of the start of flight training, noting that pilots will benefit from an immersive training experience intended to support operational readiness for the 777-9.
Collaborative development at Gatwick
The training devices were developed through collaboration between Boeing and device manufacturer CAE. Located at the Boeing Training Campus in Gatwick, United Kingdom, the 777-9 training suite includes a full-flight simulator and a flight training device designed to replicate the aircraft’s advanced systems.
According to Boeing, the devices integrate aircraft systems and sophisticated simulation software that models flight dynamics and environmental conditions to provide a realistic training environment.
Chris Broom, Vice President, Commercial Training Solutions at Boeing Global Services, said the qualification demonstrates the company’s commitment to delivering training solutions aligned with the requirements of airline customers and regulators worldwide.
Alexandre Prevost, President – Civil Aviation at CAE, said the qualification reflects a multi-year effort between CAE and Boeing, adding that the collaboration will continue as full-flight simulators are delivered to customers globally.
Following initial qualification, the training devices will be used by regulatory authorities to validate and approve training courseware before airline customers begin pilot training.
777-9 flight deck features
The 777-9, the first member of the 777X family, features a flight deck designed to provide commonality with the 777 and 787 Dreamliner while incorporating additional enhancements for flight crews.
These include:
- Large-format displays with touchscreen capability.
- The option for dual head-up displays similar to those on the 787 Dreamliner.
- A redesigned pilot seat offering greater comfort.
- A dedicated control and indicator for the 777X folding wingtips, showing whether the wingtips are extended, in motion or folded.
- Integration of portable tablet-based Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) capability.
