CESSNA CITATION CJ4 GEN3 FLIGHT TEST PROGRAM REACHES NEW MILESTONE WITH SECOND AIRCRAFT IN THE AIR

Textron Aviation has reached another key milestone in the development of its next-generation business jet, the Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen3, with the successful first flight of its second test article, known as P1. This flight represents a significant step forward in the program as the aircraft progresses steadily towards certification and entry into service, scheduled for 2026.

Taking off from Textron Aviation’s headquarters in Wichita, Kansas, the P1 aircraft took to the skies for a three-hour and 29-minute test flight. Pilots James Bearman and Corey Eckhart evaluated avionics and aircraft systems, reaching a maximum altitude of 45,000 feet and a top speed of 305 knots. Bearman reported that the aircraft performed to expectations with a smooth, seamless flight—affirming the CJ4 Gen3’s reliability and refinement.

The focus of the P1 test aircraft is on avionics, human factors, and cabin interiors. The CJ4 Gen3 is the largest aircraft in the light jet segment of the Citation family and builds on the platform’s already-proven pedigree. It offers a winning combination of speed, range, and efficiency, all while maintaining single-pilot certification—appealing to both owner/operators and corporate missions.

Textron Aviation introduced the CJ4 Gen3 at the 2024 NBAA-BACE (National Business Aviation Association – Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition). The jet features the Garmin G3000 PRIME avionics suite—its debut in a business jet. PRIME enhances the pilot experience with responsive touchscreens, reduced workload, and streamlined cockpit operations. The system also integrates Garmin Autothrottles and Garmin Emergency Autoland, representing a step change in safety and automation for light jets.

“The successful flight of P1 is another clear indicator of the program’s progress,” said Chris Hearne, senior vice president of Engineering & Programs at Textron Aviation. “It reflects the expertise and focus of our team in delivering what we believe to be the best-in-class aircraft for our customers.”

With a maximum range of 2,165 nautical miles, cruise speed of 451 ktas, and seating for up to 11 occupants, the CJ4 Gen3 blends productivity and luxury. Its 6,930-pound useful load enables a broad spectrum of operations—from executive travel to air ambulance and aerial surveillance—making it a standout performer in the evolving light jet market.

As the program advances through its development milestones, the CJ4 Gen3 signals a strong future for the Citation line, continuing to set the benchmark for performance and versatility in business aviation.
