Textron Aviation’s Cessna Citation M2 Gen3 has completed its first flight, marking a major milestone as the next-generation light jet advances towards FAA certification and planned service entry in 2027.
WICHITA, KANSAS – Textron Aviation has achieved a key development milestone in its next-generation light jet programme with the successful first flight of the Cessna Citation M2 Gen3 prototype. The aircraft will now enter an expanded flight test programme as the company progresses towards Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification and a planned entry into service in 2027.
Prototype begins flight test campaign
The initial flight took place on 2 June and lasted 2.7 hours. Piloted by Andrew Thorson and Flight Test Engineer Tanner Towns, the aircraft reached a maximum altitude of 41,000 feet and a top speed of 263 knots while evaluating aircraft handling characteristics and key onboard systems.
According to Textron Aviation, all aircraft systems and software performed as expected during the flight, with validation checks completed successfully. The company described the flight as an important step in advancing the programme towards certification.
Focus on advanced flight deck technology
The Citation M2 Gen3 continues Textron Aviation’s investment in the light jet market and introduces several new technologies aimed at enhancing operational confidence and ease of use. Among the most notable additions is Garmin Emergency Autoland technology, designed to provide an additional layer of safety for pilots and passengers.
The aircraft is also equipped with the Garmin G3000 avionics suite and autothrottle capability, reflecting growing demand for advanced flight deck automation and intuitive cockpit systems.
Cabin enhancements for passengers
Textron Aviation said the M2 Gen3 incorporates several interior improvements focused on passenger comfort and productivity. Features include premium cabin styling, ambient lighting, illuminated cupholders and an optional folding side-facing seat that can also be used for additional cargo space. Wireless charging capability, together with USB-A and USB-C charging ports, has also been incorporated into the cabin design.
The aircraft offers a maximum range of 1,550 nautical miles and a maximum payload of 1,510 pounds. With seating for up to eight occupants and baggage capacity of up to 725 pounds, the M2 Gen3 is positioned as an entry-level business jet focused on comfort, productivity and operational efficiency.
Progress towards certification
Textron Aviation said the successful first flight reflects continued progress across its next-generation Citation product line and marks the start of a rigorous evaluation programme that will continue through the certification process.
