COORDINATED OPERATIONS CRITICAL TO AIRPORT PERFORMANCE

SITA’s latest white paper reveals that real-time operational coordination and predictive optimisation are now more critical to airport performance and capacity than physical infrastructure.

SITA White Paper Highlights Predictive Optimisation

A new white paper released by SITA on 17 March 2026 asserts that airport performance is increasingly governed by operational coordination rather than physical infrastructure such as runways or terminals. As passenger volumes rise and airport ecosystems grow in complexity, fragmented decision-making has emerged as a primary operational bottleneck. The report suggests that Total Airport Management (TAM), which connects data and teams across the ecosystem, allows for earlier disruption management and more efficient use of existing infrastructure through predictive analytics.

Addressing Structural Operational Challenges

The SITA research identifies three significant structural challenges currently hindering effective coordination. Firstly, departmental focus on isolated Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) often causes pressure to move downstream, resulting in congestion. In the first half of 2025, nearly 25% of global passengers were affected by flight delays or cancellations, according to AirHelp, illustrating how disruptions ripple through uncoordinated systems. Secondly, the paper distinguishes between visibility and collective action, noting that performance only improves when teams operate from a shared operational picture supported by Airport Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM) frameworks. Finally, the transition to intelligent management must integrate with live operations without replacing existing day-to-day systems.

Real-World Implementation in Abu Dhabi

The principles of real-time operational alignment are already being utilised in Abu Dhabi through a shared operational data platform. This system integrates airlines, ground handlers, air traffic control, and government agencies to align decisions across all stakeholders. By adopting this integrated approach, the airport is strengthening its resilience and establishing a foundation for sustainable growth through data-driven optimisation.

Strategic Shift for Airport Leadership

Nathalie Altwegg, SVP of Airports at SITA, emphasised that while infrastructure investment remains essential, it does not guarantee performance in isolation. She noted that when operations are supported by predictive insights, teams can identify building pressure earlier and intervene before disruptions spread. For airport leaders managing rising demand and cost pressures, the report concludes that improved coordination is the definitive pathway to protecting capacity and ensuring smoother passenger journeys.
