Embraer and Valkyrie Aero partner to integrate AI-enabled Gunslinger technology into the A-29 Super Tucano to enhance counter-UAS mission capabilities.
AI-based technology to enhance sensors and weapons used to counter unmanned aerial systems
JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA, 4 MARCH 2026 – Embraer and Valkyrie Aero have announced a partnership to introduce Artificial Intelligence-enabled Counter Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS) capabilities to the Embraer A‑29 Super Tucano through Valkyrie Aero’s Gunslinger system.
The integration will expand the aircraft’s existing sensors and weapons systems used to counter unmanned aerial threats. The capability will be delivered through Valkyrie’s proprietary Gunslinger Artificial Intelligence suite.
AI SYSTEM DESIGNED FOR COUNTER-DRONE OPERATIONS
Valkyrie’s Gunslinger system is designed to support real-time tactical decision making in C-UAS missions. The AI-enabled system assists with the “Find, Fix, Finish” process used to identify and neutralise unmanned threats.
According to the companies, the system has been developed to address the evolving threat posed by unmanned aerial systems while providing a scalable solution for military operators. The Gunslinger capability is intended to complement the A-29’s existing integrated sensors and counter-drone mission capabilities.
LOWER-COST OPTION FOR COUNTERING UNMANNED THREATS
Military forces globally have invested significant resources to counter persistent unmanned threats, often using high-end fighter aircraft to intercept drones. The A-29 equipped with Gunslinger is intended to offer a lower-cost alternative for counter-drone operations.
The A-29 platform features a tandem cockpit, extended loiter capability and manoeuvrability, allowing it to match the speed of certain one-way attack drones. This provides a stable engagement platform for weapons including guns, guided rockets and other effectors.
Marcio Monteiro, Market Intelligence Vice-President of Embraer Defense & Security, said the partnership enhances the aircraft’s C-UAS capabilities.
He noted that the A-29 Super Tucano has accumulated more than 60,000 combat flight hours and is widely used as a light attack aircraft.
Chris Turner, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy at Valkyrie Aero, said the Gunslinger capability has been developed to address operational requirements identified by frontline operators.
