Embraer has delivered the first two A-29 Super Tucano aircraft to the Uruguayan Air Force, supporting fleet modernisation and enhanced airspace and border protection capabilities.
Aircraft support fleet renewal and expanded operational capabilities
Embraer has delivered the first two A-29 Super Tucano aircraft to the Uruguayan Air Force (FAU), marking a significant step in the country’s fleet renewal programme. The aircraft form part of a contract signed at the end of 2024, which also includes mission equipment, integrated logistics services and a flight simulator.
The new aircraft are intended to expand the FAU’s operational capabilities, including airspace and border protection.
Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security, described the delivery as a milestone in a partnership spanning more than 50 years, noting that Uruguay was the first international customer to acquire an Embraer aircraft. He said the multi-mission platform represents an important development in the FAU’s operational capabilities.
Modernisation and regional positioning
Air General Fernando Colina, Commander in Chief of the Uruguayan Air Force, said the acquisition achieves a long-awaited modernisation of the combat fleet. He stated that the incorporation of the A-29 will introduce operational and technological change, positioning Uruguay within the region with an aircraft operated by 22 air forces worldwide.
Col. S. S. (Av.) Shandelaio González, Commander of the II Air Brigade, said the aircraft’s flight performance and modern onboard systems open new technological possibilities and redefine the Air Force’s operational capabilities.
Luis H. De León, former Commander-in-Chief of the Uruguayan Air Force, added that the incorporation of the system strengthens national air defence capabilities and supports the control of airspace across the country.
A proven multi-mission platform
The A-29 Super Tucano has been selected by 22 air forces globally and has accumulated more than 600,000 flight hours. Designed for a broad range of missions, the aircraft supports Advanced Pilot Training, Close Air Support (CAS), Air Patrol, Air Interdiction, Joint Terminal Attack (JTAC), Armed Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), Border Surveillance, Air Escort and counter-drone operations.
Equipped with advanced avionics, precision target identification systems and an integrated communications suite, the A-29 combines modern human-machine interface systems with a robust airframe. The aircraft can operate from unpaved runways in austere environments without dedicated infrastructure.
The Super Tucano is designed to offer reduced maintenance requirements, high reliability and availability, and low life-cycle costs, providing a comprehensive and flexible solution for air forces seeking cost-effective multi-mission capability.
