VIETNAM AIRLINES FINALISES ORDER FOR 50 BOEING 737 MAX AIRPLANES

Vietnam Airlines has finalised an order for 50 Boeing 737-8 aircraft, marking its first single-aisle purchase from Boeing and supporting domestic and regional growth plans.

Flag carrier places first Boeing single-aisle order to support network growth

Boeing and Vietnam Airlines have announced that the Vietnamese flag carrier has finalised an order for 50 737 MAX aircraft, marking its first Boeing single-aisle purchase. The agreement was confirmed in Washington on 18 February 2026.

The addition of the 737-8 will support Vietnam Airlines’ domestic and regional expansion plans as travel demand continues to grow across Southeast Asia.

General Secretary To Lam and representatives of the United States government witnessed the announcement of the previously unidentified order, reinforcing the airline’s ongoing partnership with Boeing in Vietnam’s expanding civil aviation market.

Fleet modernisation and market growth

Dang Ngoc Hoa, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Airlines, said the airline is pursuing a comprehensive approach to strengthening its capabilities, including fleet modernisation, financial resilience and talent development.

He stated that the investment in 50 Boeing 737-8 aircraft represents a significant step towards building a modern, fuel-efficient fleet while enhancing operational performance and service standards. He added that the agreement further deepens the strategic partnership between Vietnam Airlines and Boeing and supports the carrier’s ambition to become a five-star international airline by 2030.

Vietnam’s air traffic is expected to double over the next decade to more than 75 million annual passengers. The introduction of the 737-8 is intended to provide additional reliability and capacity to meet this anticipated growth.

Capabilities of the 737-8

The 737-8 can accommodate up to 200 passengers, depending on configuration, and offers a range of up to 3,500 nautical miles (6,480 km). The aircraft is positioned to support short- and medium-haul operations within the airline’s expanding network.

Stephanie Pope, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, said Boeing is proud to continue its partnership with Vietnam Airlines as the carrier integrates the 737 MAX alongside its 787 Dreamliner fleet to scale regional networks and strengthen connectivity across Asia.

Vietnam Airlines currently operates 17 787 Dreamliners on regional and international routes between Vietnam and Europe. Combined, the 737 MAX and 787 offer a 20–25% improvement in fuel use compared to the aircraft they replace, supporting network expansion while reducing operating costs.

Boeing maintains an active presence in Vietnam across commercial aviation, supply chain activities, technical training and university partnerships, with offices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
