FINNAIR UNVEILS 100 SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVES  FOR CENTENARY YEAR

Finnair celebrates its centenary year with a remarkable commitment to sustainability, unveiling 100 initiatives aimed at environmental and social progress. Inviting its workforce to contribute ideas, Finnair received over 250 suggestions, from which they carefully selected actions aligned with their sustainability goals.

“These initiatives, introduced during our centennial celebrations, signify our dedication to the next hundred years,” stated Finnair.

Among the notable initiatives was the procurement of Finnair Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from Neste in spring 2023.

Additionally, Finnair Cargo took a significant step by installing 1,790 solar panels atop its COOL terminal during the summer and autumn of 2023. This addition complements the existing 1,200 panels, generating ample energy to power the cargo facility and even supply surplus energy to other Finnair buildings. Further, 645 solar panels are currently being installed on the roof of the LEKO11 building.

Circularity and sustainable practices are core elements of Finnair’s centenary initiatives. Efforts include reducing single-use plastics and cardboard cups in offices and onboard flights. Cardboard cups have been replaced with reusable Finnair Business Class chinaware in office spaces, while onboard processes for single-use cup usage have been refined.

Finnair has also embraced uniform recycling as part of its sustainability drive. Since early 2023, the airline has actively recycled and repurposed cabin and ground crew uniforms. Garments in good condition are repurposed, while those unsuitable for reuse are recycled into raw materials for composite products.

Maintaining its commitment to carbon-neutral flying by 2045, Finnair’s centenary sustainability initiatives underscore its dedication to environmental stewardship and responsible aviation practices.
