Dick Rutan, the legendary pilot, educator, and adventurer, has passed away at the age of 85. A press release issued on behalf of the family confirmed the news, stating that Rutan died on Friday surrounded by loved ones at Kootenai Hospital in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. His death was attributed to complications arising from a yearlong battle with long COVID.
Rutan is best remembered for his remarkable achievements in aviation, particularly his record-setting nonstop unrefueled circumnavigation alongside Jeana Yeager in 1986. Throughout his illustrious career, Rutan left an indelible mark on the aviation industry, inspiring countless individuals with his daring feats and pioneering spirit.

In a statement released by the family, it was revealed that Rutan spent his final moments in the company of friends and family, including his brother Burt Rutan, a renowned aerospace engineer. He passed away peacefully with his loving wife of 25 years, Kris Rutan, by his side. Rutan is survived by his daughters Holly Hogan and Jill Hoffman, as well as his four grandchildren, Jack, Sean, Noelle, and Haley.

Tributes poured in from across the aviation community, with EAA Chairman Jack Pelton expressing his condolences and highlighting Rutan’s significant contributions to aviation. Pelton hailed Rutan as a major figure in EAA history, noting his involvement in groundbreaking projects such as the Voyager mission and his regular appearances at AirVenture.
