GA-ASI AND US NAVY EXPAND MQ-9B SEAGUARDIAN ANTI-SUBMARINE WARFARE CAPABILITY

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), in collaboration with the US Navy, has successfully conducted flight testing of an expanded Sonobuoy Dispensing System (SDS) for the MQ-9B SeaGuardian unmanned aircraft system, further strengthening its anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capability.

The flight test, carried out on 17 December, featured a greater number of SDS pods than previously evaluated, effectively doubling the number of sonobuoys that can be carried and deployed by the MQ-9B SeaGuardian. The enhancement is intended to broaden maritime search coverage and improve ASW effectiveness for naval operators.

GA-ASI president David R. Alexander said increasing sonobuoy capacity, including the integration of Multi-static Active Coherent (MAC) technology, is central to the company’s advanced ASW strategy. He noted that the expanded capability significantly enhances maritime surveillance and detection over wider operational areas, delivering added value to customers.

During the test, the SeaGuardian deployed a range of sonobuoy types, including AN/SSQ-36 bathythermal buoys, AN/SSQ-53G Directional Frequency Analysis and Recording (DIFAR) passive buoys, and AN/SSQ-62F Directional Command Activated Sonobuoy System (DICASS) active buoys. The trial also marked the first time MAC sonobuoys were dispensed from an uncrewed aircraft. According to GA-ASI, MAC buoys enable improved submarine detection across larger areas while requiring fewer assets compared with traditional DIFAR and DICASS configurations.

The flight tests were sponsored by the US Navy and focused on certifying the SDS for operational use. The activity supports the Commander, US Pacific Fleet’s Operational Evaluation deployment to SEVENTH Fleet and was conducted with additional government oversight and support from the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) AIRWorks.

Subject to completion of testing and data review, the US Navy is expected to grant GA-ASI deployment flight clearance for ASW operations using the MQ-9B SeaGuardian in January 2026.

The MQ-9B SeaGuardian has already been employed by the US Navy in a number of recent exercises, including Northern Edge, Integrated Battle Problem, RIMPAC and Group Sail, demonstrating its growing role in maritime operations.
