General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) has reported the completion of a manned–unmanned teaming demonstration conducted with the United States Air Force from Edwards Air Force Base.
According to the company, the exercise involved an MQ-20 Avenger unmanned jet operating alongside an F-22 Raptor equipped with government reference autonomy software. The mission demonstrated autonomous operations integrated with a crewed combat aircraft in a tactical environment.
GA-ASI states that the demonstration validated the use of a tactical data link enabling the F-22 to transmit autonomy commands directly to the MQ-20. These commands allowed the unmanned aircraft to adjust waypoints and execute assigned tasking in coordination with the crewed platform.
The exercise forms part of ongoing efforts to mature manned–unmanned teaming concepts, with emphasis on secure communications, autonomy control and operational integration between fighter aircraft and unmanned systems.
