H55 SELECTS SAFRAN ELECTRIC MOTOR FOR BRISTELL B23 ENERGIC PROGRAMME

H55 has selected Safran Electrical & Power to supply the electric propulsion motor for the Bristell B23 Energic, as both companies advance certified electric propulsion solutions for light general aviation aircraft.

CERTIFIED ELECTRIC PROPULSION PARTNERSHIP

H55 and Safran Electrical & Power have entered into an agreement to integrate the Safran ENGINeUS electric motor into H55’s electric propulsion system.

The system will power the Bristell B23 Energic, a fully electric variant of the established Bristell B23 platform.

FOCUS ON CERTIFICATION PATHWAY

The collaboration is positioned around delivering certified propulsion systems for CS-23 / Part 23 Level 1 and 2 aircraft, where certification remains a key barrier to broader adoption of electric aviation.

Safran’s ENGINeUS motor, already certified by EASA, will be combined with H55’s energy storage and propulsion integration systems.

The programme is intended to accelerate the availability of certifiable electric propulsion solutions for aircraft in the two- to six-seat category.

TRAINING MARKET AS ENTRY POINT

The Bristell B23 Energic is being positioned as a certification platform targeting the pilot training market, where electric propulsion aligns with:

  • Lower operating costs
  • Reduced maintenance requirements
  • Zero-emission operations

The existing B23 platform, already certified under both EASA and FAA standards, provides a baseline that may allow operators to transition to electric propulsion with minimal operational disruption.

PROGRAMME TIMELINE AND SUPPORT

Safran Electrical & Power will support both prototype development and serial production, with involvement expected to begin in 2027.

The agreement also includes in-service support for the propulsion system, reinforcing the long-term operational framework required for certified electric aircraft.

INDUSTRY CONTEXT

The partnership brings together two areas of technical development within electric aviation: certified electric motors and certification-grade energy storage systems.

This integrated approach reflects a broader shift in the sector towards complete propulsion solutions that can meet regulatory requirements, rather than standalone component development.

OUTLOOK

As certification pathways remain a central challenge in electric aviation, collaborations of this nature are likely to shape the pace of adoption within general aviation.

The Bristell B23 Energic programme provides a practical platform for advancing certified electric propulsion within the training segment, where operational profiles align with current battery and system capabilities.
