January 2025 – Kenya Airways (KQ) has solidified its position as a global leader in sustainable aviation, earning two prestigious awards at the 2024 SkyTeam Aviation Challenge. The event, held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on January 14-15, celebrated innovation and sustainability in aviation.
Kenya Airways claimed top honors in the Best Scaled Catering Solution and Best Approach to Scaling Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) categories.
Sustainability at the Forefront
In the Best Scaled Catering Solution category, Kenya Airways was lauded for its innovative measures to eliminate single-use plastics onboard. By introducing traditional African bread baskets and lightweight aluminium food containers in economy class, the airline expects to reduce 24 tonnes of plastic waste annually, setting a benchmark for eco-conscious operations.
The airline’s groundbreaking approach to SAF earned them the Best Approach to Scaling SAF award. Partnering with a local SAF producer, Kenya Airways has initiated Kenya’s first SAF production facility. This project promises to deliver affordable SAF, create jobs in Kwale County, and enhance Kenya’s tree cover through energy seed cultivation on arid lands.

Kenya Airways also received recognition for:
- Best Team Collaboration for its Sustainability Champions program, fostering teamwork across departments.
