L3Harris Technologies has officially completed a $125 million expansion of its Fort Wayne, Indiana, space manufacturing facility, reinforcing its commitment to delivering cutting-edge defensce technology for the United States. The development will play a pivotal role in the creation of a “Golden Dome” – an ambitious missile warning and defence architecture aimed at safeguarding the homeland.
The newly expanded 95,000-square-foot site will serve as a hub for engineering, integration, testing, and program management activities in support of L3Harris’ missile defence programs. It is expected to significantly boost satellite production, including systems supporting the Space Development Agency and the Missile Defence Agency.
“This strategic investment marks a critical step in strengthening our national defence infrastructure and reinforces the importance of American-made capabilities,” said Representative Marlin Stutzman (R-IN), during the facility’s dedication ceremony. “The economic impact on our community will be substantial, and we hope other companies follow suit.”
Ed Zoiss, President of L3Harris Space and Airborne Systems, emphasised the company’s readiness to meet growing defence demands: “With capacity to produce 48 payloads per year, we’re accelerating delivery timelines to support the Golden Dome and other vital initiatives. Our expanded footprint positions us to defend against evolving global threats.”
L3Harris currently has five satellites in orbit and 34 in production for key defence programmes, including the Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking Space Sensor (HBTSS). The expansion also enhances the company’s ability to serve global customers with advanced weather and space-based systems.
