M-346 F “Block 20” selected to support Indonesian Air Force training and combat requirements

Rome, 4 February 2026 — Leonardo has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with PT ESystem Solutions Indonesia and the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Indonesia covering cooperation for the potential supply and support of the M-346 F “Block 20” aircraft for Indonesian Air Force operational requirements.

The signing was announced at the Singapore Airshow 2026 and follows the Indonesian Ministry of Defence’s selection of the M-346 platform to address national training and combat capability requirements.

Supporting Fleet Modernisation and Capability Development

The programme is intended to support Indonesia’s ongoing aircraft fleet modernisation strategy. The M-346’s advanced technology and performance are expected to contribute to replacing ageing aircraft types, including the Hawk, among others.

The LOI also includes provisions for localisation of support activities, including maintenance, overhaul, training capability development and broader human capital development. The parties will now move to the next stage of discussions aimed at progressing towards a procurement contract.

M-346 F “Block 20” Configuration and Capabilities

The M-346 F “Block 20” light fighter configuration will feature a cockpit equipped with a Large Area Display, active electronically scanned radar, Link 16 data link capability, electronic countermeasures and new weapons systems.

The platform is designed to provide both advanced flight training capability and light combat capability. Leonardo’s integrated training system includes a Ground Based Training System (GBTS), combining simulation environments and real flight training using a Live, Virtual and Constructive training approach.

The aircraft also incorporates mission systems, sensors and equipment supporting air-to-air and air-to-surface missions, as well as aerial refuelling capability.

Established Advanced Training Platform

The M-346 forms part of an advanced and continuously evolving flight training system that has accumulated more than 150,000 flight hours. Nearly 160 aircraft have been sold globally and the platform is used by several air forces, including operators in Asia, to prepare pilots for transition to latest-generation fighter aircraft and future combat air systems.

Approximately 20 countries currently use the M-346 for pilot training or have selected the aircraft, including the fighter configuration, for light multi-role operational roles. The aircraft has also been selected by the Italian Air Force as the future platform for the Frecce Tricolori national aerobatic team.
