LEONARDO UNVEILS VIP CABIN MOCKUP OF AW09 HELICOPTER AT EBACE 2024

Leonardo Helicopters made a significant splash at the European Business Aviation Conference and Exhibition (EBACE 2024) by unveiling a full-scale cabin mockup of its AW09 Agusta single-engine helicopter. The mockup featured a luxurious VIP-corporate transport cabin layout, marking Leonardo’s debut of its Agusta-branded helicopter line.

The AW09, initially developed by Kopter Group, is on the verge of certification following Leonardo’s acquisition of the Swiss company in 2020. Richard Grant, an experimental test pilot for Kopter Group, emphasized the importance of the project: “Being part of a team to bring a next-generation helicopter to market is really something special. We’re working to raise the latest safety standards to bring an aircraft that’s easy to fly, easy to operate, but also has an enjoyable passenger experience.”

Leonardo touts the AW09’s spacious cabin, offering generous legroom and multiple seating configurations, making it the largest cabin in the single-engine class. At EBACE 2024, the company also introduced themed interior designs for the helicopter, including Desert Dawn, Cedar Woods, Ocean Twilight, and Dark Cosmos.

Expected to enter service in 2025, the AW09 will benefit from Leonardo’s “Agusta for You” program, which provides specialised technical service and maintenance support. Described as a “true digital helicopter,” the AW09 will feature capabilities for data transmission, technical support, scheduled maintenance, and flight efficiency and safety enhancements.

In February 2024, Leonardo achieved a milestone by conducting the first flight of its fifth AW09 prototype, PS5, aiming to meet the European Union Aviation Safety Agency’s CS-27 Small Rotorcraft standards. Significant updates have been made to the AW09, including the integration of the Safran Arriel 2 engine.

The addition of the VIP-corporate transport configuration enhances the helicopter’s versatility, allowing it to perform a variety of missions such as passenger transport, emergency medical services, and security operations. Leonardo reports that it has secured more than 100 preliminary sales contracts for the AW09 globally.

The unveiling at EBACE 2024 signifies Leonardo’s commitment to innovation and excellence in the aviation industry, setting high expectations for the AW09’s entry into service.
