NIGERIA WELCOMES STATE-BACKED ENUGU AIR WITH INAUGURAL FLIGHT

ENUGU, Nigeria — Nigeria’s aviation sector has gained a new entrant with the official launch of Enugu Air, a state-backed airline aimed at transforming the southeast region into a hub for investment, tourism, and connectivity. The inaugural flight took place on Monday at Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, marking a milestone moment for the region and for Governor Peter Mbah’s administration.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Mbah described the launch as “a significant moment for the southeast,” reinforcing his administration’s goal to position Enugu as the premier destination for investment, living, and tourism in Nigeria.

The airline will begin domestic operations with a 17-year-old Embraer E190, linking Enugu to key Nigerian cities including Abuja and Lagos. The initial network forms a “powerful golden triangle,” as Mbah described it, with expansion planned to Port Harcourt, Owerri, Benin, Kano, and other cities.

Looking beyond domestic borders, Mbah outlined bold international ambitions for Enugu Air.

“We’re starting off with three Embraer aircraft – efficient, elegant birds made for our terrain,” he said. “But we are not stopping there. In the next phase, we will fly beyond Nigeria, into other African countries, China, Europe, UK, US, and other global business hubs.”

Enugu Air is positioned as a public-private venture, representing a modern model of collaboration aimed at delivering lasting infrastructure and economic value.

“With our airline, we are opening doors to a sector that once felt out of reach,” said Mbah. “Enugu Air has given more wings to our dreams, and today we take that first flight together.”

As Nigeria’s aviation landscape continues to expand, the arrival of Enugu Air reflects growing regional confidence and the potential for localised air transport to support national and global connectivity.
