Nippon Cargo Airlines joins BARIG’s air cargo segment, strengthening industry collaboration and highlighting ongoing operational challenges in Germany’s cargo sector.
Japan’s only dedicated cargo airline strengthens German industry association network
Frankfurt am Main, 23 April 2026 — Board of Airline Representatives in Germany (BARIG) has confirmed that Nippon Cargo Airlines has joined its air cargo segment, expanding the association’s growing network of cargo operators.
The Tokyo-based carrier, Japan’s only dedicated all-cargo airline, currently operates two weekly flights between Tokyo and Frankfurt, reinforcing trade connectivity between the two major economic centres.
INDUSTRY COOPERATION AND CARGO CHALLENGES
BARIG stated that the addition of Nippon Cargo Airlines brings further operational expertise to its cargo community, which now includes more than 35 cargo carriers.
According to BARIG Chairman and Executive Director Michael Hoppe, the air cargo sector continues to face structural challenges, including high location costs, complex processes, and administrative burdens. The association is working to improve framework conditions for cargo operations in Germany through industry collaboration.
STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE OF THE GERMAN MARKET
Nippon Cargo Airlines highlighted the importance of the German market, noting the long-standing economic ties between Germany and Japan.
The airline, which began operations in 1985, operates a fleet of eight Boeing 747-8F aircraft and provides global cargo services. The carrier indicated that participation in BARIG will support knowledge exchange and contribute to ongoing industry development.
ASSOCIATION ROLE IN AVIATION POLICY
BARIG represents more than 100 national and international airlines across scheduled, charter, low-cost, and cargo operations. Established in 1951, the association acts as a central interface between the aviation industry, policymakers, and regulatory authorities in Germany.
