Connecting Skies • Bridging Continents

NORTHROP GRUMMAN ENHANCES KC-135 WITH ADVANCED INTEROPERABILITY SOLUTION

The KC-135 Stratotanker, a cornerstone of U.S. aerial refuelling for nearly seven decades, is poised for a transformation. Traditionally limited to non-combat environments due to situational awareness and communication constraints, the platform could see expanded battlefield roles with an affordable, robust voice and data interoperability system.

Next-Level Connectivity for Tanker Platforms

Northrop Grumman, in collaboration with the Utah Air National Guard and Air Mobility Command, recently demonstrated a data interoperability system designed to enhance survivability and situational awareness. By integrating NG InSight™, Northrop Grumman’s next-generation connectivity and secure communications suite, the KC-135 could become a critical node in a connected battlespace.

This system allows the translation and distribution of imagery, voice, and tactical data across multiple warfighting platforms, enabling a unified operating picture. It enhances the tanker’s ability to relay mission-critical information, giving joint and coalition forces real-time battlefield intelligence.

A Force Multiplier in the Airspace

The demonstration served as a pathfinder and risk reduction exercise, assessing how enhanced connectivity can improve combat capabilities for air tankers. The customisable and portable solution can be integrated into most tanker platforms, allowing for rapid deployment and removal as needed.

Kevin Berkowitz, Vice President of Communications Solutions at Northrop Grumman, emphasised the potential impact:

“Our system shows how a connected tanker platform could be used for more than air refuelling and cargo transport. The additional communications and survivability support could address current challenges for today’s tankers and shape the role they play in the battlespace.”

Modernising Air Mobility for Future Missions

Tankers typically operate in permissive airspace, but with Northrop Grumman’s portable communications system, they could safely enter contested environments and seamlessly connect all platforms in the battlespace.

“As the battlespace becomes increasingly complex, the ability to receive, translate and transmit data between legacy and emerging platforms is critical,” said Berkowitz. “Equipping tankers already in the field with our portable communications system would rapidly increase our ability to share essential information, keeping our warfighters safe and enabling them to carry out the mission.”

By modernising air mobility, Northrop Grumman is ensuring that the KC-135 and other tanker platforms remain relevant, effective, and indispensable assets for the future fight.
