Qatar Airways completes a worldwide rollout of SITA’s SD-WAN technology, strengthening connectivity, cybersecurity, and operational resilience across more than 350 international outstations.
Airlines are contending with rising passenger numbers and increasingly complex digital demands, placing intense pressure on ageing network infrastructure. To address these challenges, Qatar Airways has implemented SITA’s next-generation Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) across its global outstations—marking SITA’s first large-scale SD-WAN deployment for a major international airline.
SD-WAN replaces rigid, legacy networks with an intelligent, software-based architecture designed to route data dynamically across multiple connections, including MPLS, broadband, dedicated internet, and LTE/5G. By continuously selecting the best path in real time, the system delivers faster response times, fewer outages, and greater resilience—critical for airline operations that rely on seamless performance across hundreds of sites worldwide.
This extensive rollout spans more than 350 outstation sites and multiple data centres. It directly tackles longstanding concerns such as latency and bandwidth limitations, ensuring priority for essential applications that keep operations on track. For passengers, this translates into reduced waiting times, quicker access to digital services, and a consistently reliable experience throughout their journey.
Cybersecurity has also been significantly enhanced. The managed network incorporates multiple layers of protection, including secure data channels, strict access controls, and a zero-trust security model that continuously verifies every user and device. These measures reduce the risk of cyber threats and give Qatar Airways confidence in the end-to-end integrity of its global operations.
“Airlines everywhere are grappling with soaring traffic volumes, rising security threats, and the need to modernise creaking legacy infrastructure,” said Selim Bouri, President, Middle East & Africa at SITA. “SD-WAN is a game changer because it delivers the speed, resilience, and protection needed to keep operations running seamlessly at global scale. With Qatar Airways, we’re seeing a flagship example of how next-generation networks can unlock new levels of efficiency and customer experience across the industry.”
For Qatar Airways, the upgrade aligns closely with its long-term commitment to operational excellence. “We have always been committed to adopting innovations that strengthen our operations and elevate the passenger journey and experience,” said Suhail Kadri, Chief Information Officer at Qatar Airways. “Our collaboration with SITA reflects that vision. Together, we are building a network that supports our growth ambitions and sets a new standard for how airlines connect and operate worldwide.”
With a hub-and-spoke network serving more than 172 destinations and a fleet of 250 aircraft, Qatar Airways is future-proofing its digital backbone to support continued expansion. Its adoption of SITA’s SD-WAN sets a strong precedent for the wider aviation industry as it shifts toward more agile, secure, and resilient network architectures.
