RAISING THE BAR FOR DRONE PILOTS: MISSION FOR LEGAL, RESPONSIBLE FLYING

At AEROSA 2025 in Lanseria, World Airnews caught up with Jan, the founder of Drone Pilot Training—an initiative based in Benoni at the Cabin Crew Academy. With the growing integration of drones into industries like security, agriculture, journalism, and real estate, Jan is on a mission to ensure drone pilots operate legally and responsibly.

“Too many people buy drones and start flying without understanding aviation law,” Jan explained. “Drones aren’t toys—there are real safety and privacy implications.”

To combat this, Drone Pilot Training offers a comprehensive programme that covers everything from theoretical aviation knowledge and radio communication to practical flight instruction. The course can be completed in as little as three weeks and is tailored to suit each student’s pace. For licensed pilots, the programme is even faster, skipping the radio training component.

Beyond licensing, Jan is passionate about raising awareness. “Even if someone doesn’t want to get licensed, they should still understand the rules. Knowing what you can and can’t do with a drone is essential.”

With industries increasingly reliant on drone operations—from crop spraying to perimeter surveillance—Drone Pilot Training is filling a critical gap. As Jan summed it up: “We want to help people become safe, skilled, and certified pilots.”
