Johannesburg: After two days of disruption, South African Airways (SAA) has announced the suspension of the pilots’ strike that commenced on 5 December 2024. The resolution follows a breakthrough in negotiations between SAA Executive Management and the South African Airways Pilots Association (SAAPA).
Key to ending the deadlock was an agreement to increase pilots’ salaries by an additional 1%, bringing the total salary hike to 9.47%. The negotiations, marked by robust discussions, reflected both parties’ commitment to resolving the dispute while prioritising operational stability.
Professor Lamola, an SAA representative, expressed optimism for the airline’s future, stating, “As part of the agreement that broke the deadlock in wage negotiations, engagements on a continuous enterprise improvement program will continue over the next eight weeks. We are committed to implementing work-life concessions that should enhance the productivity of our world-acclaimed pilots.”
SAA anticipates resuming its full flight schedule by Sunday, 8 December 2024, with over 100 pilots expected to return to work. The airline has expressed gratitude to its customers for their patience and understanding during this challenging period.
