SAFRAN NACELLES EXPANDS BURNLEY MANUFACTURING EXPERTISE TO SUPPORT NEXT-GENERATION AEROSPACE PROGRAMMES

Safran Nacelles is strengthening the role of its Burnley facility as the Group’s Centre of Excellence for aerospace sheet metal manufacturing, combining specialist production capabilities with advanced manufacturing technologies to support future aircraft programmes.

Centre of Excellence supports complex aerospace manufacturing

Safran Nacelles is continuing to expand the capabilities of its Burnley manufacturing facility in the United Kingdom, reinforcing its position as the company’s Centre of Excellence for aerospace sheet metal manufacturing and industrialisation.

Located in Lancashire, one of the UK’s established aerospace manufacturing regions, the site has developed decades of expertise producing complex metallic components for major engine programmes, including the Rolls-Royce Trent 700, RB211 and Honeywell HTF7000.

Turning complex designs into production-ready components

The Burnley facility specialises in transforming detailed engineering drawings into production-ready aerospace components capable of meeting demanding serial manufacturing requirements.

Its expertise centres on manufacturing complex geometry parts requiring high levels of mechanical strength and fire resistance, using a broad range of specialist processes including welding, stretch forming, press braking, heat treatment, precision sheet metal fabrication, stamping, non-destructive testing, painting and finishing.

According to Safran Nacelles, the site now produces more than 220,000 parts annually and can respond rapidly to urgent production requirements or supply chain disruptions.

Supporting future aerospace technologies

Since becoming Safran’s Centre of Excellence for sheet metal manufacturing, Burnley has expanded its role beyond supporting Safran Nacelles programmes to provide specialist manufacturing expertise across multiple Safran businesses.

The facility is also working with development teams and academic partners on next-generation manufacturing technologies, including 3DMF® processes and research with the University of Strathclyde into advanced cold-forming techniques. These initiatives are intended to support future aerospace programmes while improving manufacturing efficiency and competitiveness.

Building resilience across the aerospace supply chain

The Burnley site’s ability to industrialise complex components quickly has become an increasingly valuable capability as aerospace manufacturers seek to strengthen supply chain resilience and accelerate production ramp-ups.

Safran Nacelles says growing recognition of the facility’s specialist expertise is creating opportunities beyond internal Group programmes, reflecting broader industry demand for advanced manufacturing capabilities capable of supporting next-generation aircraft development.
