SITA LAUNCHES EWAS+ TO BRING WEATHER AND OPERATIONAL DATA INTO ONE PILOT APP

The new electronic flight bag app builds on SITA’s existing eWAS platform, pairing weather and operational information with fuel-saving recommendations for airlines that also use SITA OptiFlight.

SITA has launched SITA eWAS+, a new electronic flight bag (EFB) app that pairs weather and operational data into a single view for every phase of flight, the company said. The app builds on SITA eWAS, which has been used by more than 40,000 pilots at more than 60 airlines for more than 12 years.

With weather and operational information combined in one app, SITA says pilots can make faster, more informed decisions at critical moments, such as whether to change altitude to avoid clear-air turbulence, which onboard weather radar cannot detect. Rather than interpreting raw data from separate systems, pilots see the information relevant to where and when it matters.

“Pilots have access to more data than ever before, but the time they have to make decisions in the cockpit hasn’t changed,” said Albert Dominguez, Head of Apps and Data at SITA for Aircraft. “Pilots will always make the call, but technology needs to keep evolving to support them with the most crucial information. SITA eWAS+ is shaped by feedback from the airlines and pilots we work alongside, and we will keep developing it around the way they fly.”

DATA SOURCES AND FUEL-SAVING INTEGRATION

SITA eWAS+ aggregates data from more than 10 certified weather providers and more than 40 weather products, including turbulence, winds, icing and lightning, combined with trajectory, airspace and airport information on both a map and a vertical profile. Its stated 4D operational awareness feature shows how conditions along the route will develop by the time the aircraft reaches each point.

Pilots at airlines that also use SITA OptiFlight, SITA’s full-flight optimisation solution, can weigh its fuel-saving recommendations against the conditions ahead, with each recommendation presented alongside relevant weather and operational information across climb, cruise and descent. SITA eWAS+ offers the same features on iPadOS and Windows, and is available through airlines’ private enterprise app stores or the public App Store.
