Kenya Airways secures three awards at The Aviation Challenge 2025 in Copenhagen, recognising its practical sustainability initiatives, collaborative work with KLM, and measurable reductions in single-use plastic.
Denmark, 22 January 2025 – Kenya Airways has secured three awards at The Aviation Challenge 2025, marking the fourth consecutive year the airline has been recognised for its practical approach to sustainable aviation.
Â
At the 2025 edition of the challenge, Kenya Airways received the following awards:
- Most Impactful Solution – Catering
- Game Changer of the Year
- Special Recognition for Collaboration with KLM
The results underscore the airline’s focus on embedding sustainability into everyday operations through measurable actions and partnerships, demonstrating how African carriers are contributing to global innovation in green aviation.
Â
Commenting on the awards, George Kamal, Acting Group Managing Director and CEO of Kenya Airways, said the recognition reflects the airline’s ongoing commitment to sustainability through innovation and focused execution. He noted that the awards acknowledge the work of both employees and partners as Kenya Airways continues to integrate sustainable practices across its operations and contribute to broader industry change.

Catering Initiatives Deliver Measurable Impact
The Most Impactful Solution – Catering and Game Changer of the Year awards recognise initiatives that have been implemented across all Kenya Airways flights. These include the introduction of recyclable aluminium food packaging, bamboo cutlery in place of single-use plastic, paper cups replacing plastic cups, and canned beverages instead of plastic bottles.
Â
Collectively, these measures have enabled Kenya Airways to avoid more than 337 tonnes of single-use plastic each year and generate annual savings exceeding KES 50 million. The initiatives reflect a shift towards making sustainability part of standard operational practice rather than isolated projects.
Â
Collaboration with KLM Recognised
Kenya Airways also received Special Recognition for Collaboration for its ongoing partnership with KLM. Over four editions of The Aviation Challenge, the two airlines have worked together to exchange ideas, develop practical solutions, and accelerate their implementation across operations. The recognition highlights the role of collaboration in advancing sustainability outcomes within the airline industry.

Jambojet Also Honoured
In addition to Kenya Airways’ achievements, Jambojet, a subsidiary of Kenya Airways, was recognised with the Most Compelling Story award. The accolade reflects Jambojet’s approach to communicating sustainability efforts and their impact through effective storytelling.

Global Sustainability Focus
The awards were presented at a global aviation sustainability event held in Copenhagen, Denmark, which brought together SkyTeam member airlines to develop practical and scalable solutions aimed at reducing the industry’s environmental footprint.
