WONDERBOOM AIRSHOW SHINES DESPITE THE WEATHER: PRECISION, PROFESSIONALISM, AND PURE AVIATION JOY

Pretoria’s Wonderboom National Airport roared back to life this past weekend with an airshow that reminded South Africans – and indeed the international aviation community – why this venue remains one of the country’s premier civilian aviation stages. Despite an uninvited guest appearance by afternoon rain, the 2025 Wonderboom Airshow was a masterclass in planning, timing, and crowd engagement.

Speaking of air, the commentary team deserves their own standing ovation. The new duo of Ian and Megan handled the mic like seasoned broadcast professionals. Whether they were breaking down manoeuvres for kids in the crowd, adding light humour for the seasoned aviators, or seamlessly filling transitions with aviation insights, they kept the audience captivated from the opening sequence to the moment the rain arrived. Their chemistry, clarity, and confidence elevated the atmosphere and set a benchmark for future shows.

One of the most celebrated elements of the day was the generous support from the South African Air Force.  With three operational helicopters in the air and another Rooivalk attack helicopter on static display, the choppers were accompanied by beautifully preserved Museum Harvards led by a beautiful Bosbok – the  SAAF contributed not only hardware but heart and commitment. An operational hoisting duo with the Augusta A109 and the exceptional BK117 set the stage for the solo displays. The SAAF also provided an exceptionally talented female SAAF commentator to join Ian and Megan during segments, who delivered crisp operational context while giving the crowd a refreshing, professional perspective that resonated strongly throughout the crowd and more importantly with the young aspiring pilots in the audience.

Of course, aviation has a way of reminding all of us that weather is ultimately in charge. Early afternoon, as clouds churned and the wind shifted, the organisers made the call to cancel the remainder of the show with a unannounced downpour – a hard decision met with understanding from a thoroughly satisfied crowd.

Fortunately, the weather held off just long enough for Airlink’s charismatic Embraer E-195 E2 Jet to complete its magnificent high-energy display, leaving spectators buzzing long after the engines had spooled down.

And for the die-hards – the ones who stayed until after the rain when the skies opened up – the SAAF rewarded loyalty with something special: an impromptu practice session featuring the BK117 and fearsome Rooivalk on their way back to base. With emergency services still positioned and alert, the late-day mini-display turned into a memorable encore for those who had braved the storm.

In the end, the 2025 Wonderboom Airshow was more than just a success – it was a triumph of teamwork, planning, and passion for aviation from the Craetive Media organisers and Smoke on Go. From the flawless and safe running of the flying displays to the pitch-perfect commentary and the generous support of the SAAF, the day left thousands of spectators grinning, clapping, and already asking – When’s the next one?

To everyone involved, the organisers, commentators and both the civilians and military pilots – well done.

You made the SAAF and Wonderboom proud.
