ZAMBIAN FEMALE AIRCRAFT ENGINEER MAKES HISTORY WITH PRESTIGIOUS INTERNATIONAL SAFETY AWARD

In a groundbreaking achievement, Lillian Lungu, a Manager Quality Safety at the Zambia Civil Aviation Authority, has been honoured with the International Federation of Airworthiness (IFA) Whitte Safety Award. This accolade, recognising outstanding contributions to aircraft safety, marks Lungu as the first African and the first female to receive this prestigious honour.

Lungu’s accolade celebrates her three decades of dedication to aviation, highlighting her pioneering role as one of Africa’s first female aircraft engineers. The award was presented by Ethiopia’s Minister of Transport and Logistics, Dr. Alemu Feyisa, during the African Aviation MRO Africa and African Aviation Training Conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Dr. Feyisa emphasised that prioritising safety in aviation not only safeguards lives and assets but also builds confidence within the airline industry.

Reflecting on her achievement, Lungu expressed immense pride in representing Zambia on the global stage. She voiced her gratitude and highlighted the increasing presence of women in aviation, encouraging more females to pursue careers in this traditionally male-dominated field.

“Winning this award is an honour, and I hope it inspires more women to follow their dreams and consider aircraft engineering as a career,” said Lungu, who is also a newly admitted lawyer.

Zambia’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Mrs. Rose Sakala, attended the ceremony and praised Lungu’s accomplishment. She noted that this recognition positions Zambia favourably on the international scene and serves as an inspiration for many Zambians, particularly young girls, to pursue professions traditionally dominated by men.

“Lillian Lungu exemplifies excellence in a male-dominated profession and sets a powerful example for women aspiring to careers in aviation and beyond,” said Ambassador Sakala.

Lungu’s historic win not only celebrates her personal achievements but also marks a significant step forward for gender equality in the aviation industry.
