Airlink, Southern Africa’s premier full-service airline, is set to modernise and expand its fleet with the lease of 10 brand-new Embraer E195-E2 jets from Azorra, the Fort Lauderdale-based aircraft leasing, finance, and asset management company.
The agreement, which is expected to be finalised shortly, will see deliveries from Embraer’s manufacturing facilities in Brazil commence later this year and continue through to 2027. This strategic acquisition marks a new chapter in Airlink’s long-standing relationship with Embraer, which began in 2001 and has played a pivotal role in the airline’s success.
The Embraer E195-E2 is a cutting-edge, twin-engine jet featuring 136 and 124-seat configurations and powered by Pratt & Whitney’s advanced GTF engines. The aircraft offers up to 29% fuel savings compared to the previous-generation E195s, significantly enhancing economic and environmental efficiency across Airlink’s 45-destination network that spans 15 countries – including remote locations such as St Helena Island and Madagascar.
The E2’s extended range and approximately 33% increase in seating capacity over Airlink’s current E190s will allow the airline to lower unit costs on high-demand routes and explore new destinations across sub-Saharan Africa. The fleet expansion aligns with Airlink’s commitment to providing efficient, reliable, and comfortable regional air services.
Beyond performance, the E2s offer a high degree of commonality with Airlink’s existing Embraer fleet – including similar flight decks, operating procedures, and maintenance requirements – ensuring a smooth integration and streamlined training.
Commenting on the development, Airlink CEO de Villiers Engelbrecht said:
“The E195-E2 will bolster our business, helping us to be even more competitive on key routes and in doing so, continue providing the great value offering our customers are accustomed to.”
John Evans, CEO of Azorra, added:
“This decision marks a significant milestone in our relationship with Airlink. The E195-E2 offers the perfect combination of increased capacity, efficiency and flexibility, helping Airlink expand its network while maintaining the high-frequency service its passengers value.”
Embraer Commercial Aviation President and CEO Arjan Meijer noted:
“The E2 continues to prove its value for airlines worldwide and this latest development highlights Embraer’s growing presence in Africa. It’s a great vote of confidence in Embraer and the E2, that Airlink, one of the continent’s most successful airlines, and a long-time Embraer operator, intends joining the E2 family.”
This partnership signals continued growth for Airlink and reaffirms Embraer’s footprint on the African continent.
