Addis Ababa, 19 June 2025 – Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest and most successful carrier, has taken another step in strengthening its regional network with the acquisition of two De Havilland Canada Twin Otter Classic 300-G aircraft. The deal underscores the airline’s ongoing commitment to enhancing domestic connectivity and service delivery across hard-to-reach areas.
Signed with De Havilland Canada, the agreement marks the reintroduction of the versatile Twin Otter into the Ethiopian Airlines fleet, now in its latest 300-G variant. With a strong reputation for durability and adaptability, the Twin Otter is designed to serve remote destinations with minimal infrastructure—something Ethiopia’s vast and varied landscape demands.
“We are pleased to bring back the enhanced version of the De Havilland Canada Twin Otter DHC-6-300G aircraft into our fleet,” said Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO, Mr. Mesfin Tasew. “These versatile aircraft are designed to support tourism and offer a wide array of services, including air ambulance, airport calibration, and charter operations. Renowned for their proven reliability, the DHC-6-300G aircraft are capable of landing on airstrips unsuitable for larger aircraft models.”
The move reflects Ethiopian’s vision of strengthening regional integration and accessibility. Already serving 22 domestic destinations with Dash 8-400 double-cabin aircraft, the addition of the 300-G will allow the airline to access even more remote airstrips, many of which are beyond the reach of conventional regional jets.
This acquisition also supports Ethiopian Airlines’ broader infrastructure expansion. Aviation facilities are under development in several regions of the country, laying the groundwork for increased flight frequencies, new routes, and elevated service delivery in underserved areas.
As Africa’s aviation leader, Ethiopian continues to demonstrate a balanced strategy of growth—combining intercontinental ambition with grassroots connectivity. The Twin Otter Classic 300-G will be instrumental in furthering that mission, providing reliable, efficient, and flexible operations tailored to East Africa’s unique aviation needs.
