Universal Avionics’ InSight Flight Display System has received certification for retrofit installation on De Havilland Canada CL-415 waterbombers, enabling modernisation of aerial firefighting fleets.
CERTIFICATION ENABLES FLEET MODERNISATION
The Supplemental Type Certificate (STC), issued by Transport Canada Civil Aviation, provides operators of CL-415 amphibious firefighting aircraft with a certified pathway to replace legacy cockpit systems with a modern digital flight deck.
The certification supports continued operational use of the aircraft by addressing ageing avionics systems and extending service life.
UPGRADE PATH FOR AERIAL FIREFIGHTING OPERATIONS
The InSight retrofit introduces a fully integrated glass cockpit featuring five digital displays, dual touchscreen controllers, dual flight management systems, and integrated voice and flight data recording capability.
The system also incorporates communications management and cloud-connected applications, supporting improved data handling and operational coordination.
FOCUS ON SAFETY AND SITUATIONAL AWARENESS
The upgraded flight deck enhances situational awareness through high-resolution displays, synthetic vision capability, and integrated terrain awareness and warning systems.
These features are designed to support decision-making in demanding low-level firefighting operations, where terrain, visibility and workload present ongoing challenges.
OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY AND LIFECYCLE EXTENSION
By replacing analogue instrumentation with digital systems, the retrofit reduces obsolescence-related maintenance challenges and supports long-term fleet sustainability.
Improved system integration and data management also contribute to reduced pilot workload and more efficient mission execution.
The InSight retrofit is available through De Havilland Canada for operators seeking to modernise their CL-415 fleets.
