LEONARDO TO SELF-GENERATE MORE THAN 10% OF ITS ITALIAN ENERGY CONSUMPTION

A new 43 MW renewable energy programme across 20 company sites, alongside a completed LED lighting upgrade, marks a further step in Leonardo’s decarbonisation pathway.

Leonardo is taking a further step in its decarbonisation journey with progress on its renewable energy self-generation programme and the completion of its LED Lighting Full Potential programme, the company said in Rome on 22 October 2026. The initiatives are intended to cut emissions, improve energy efficiency and strengthen business resilience.

The energy self-generation programme covers 20 Group sites across Italy, with a total installed capacity of approximately 43 MW, making it one of the largest industrial photovoltaic projects in the country. Once fully operational, the programme will meet over 10% of Leonardo’s annual energy consumption in Italy, approximately 55 GWh, avoiding around 13,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.

Implemented by Leonardo Global Solutions and developed with energy sector partners, the project forms part of the Group’s Sustainability Plan, in line with Leonardo’s Transition Plan and its principle of decoupling industrial growth from resource consumption and environmental impact. The new installations are intended to help offset an expected rise in energy consumption in the coming years, in line with the company’s new Industrial Plan.

“Investing in the self-generation of energy from renewable sources is enabling Leonardo to strengthen its energy self-sufficiency, improve its energy efficiency and help ensure its security of supply,” said Francesco Macrì, Chairman of Leonardo. “This approach combines industrial competitiveness with sustainability, reducing exposure to the volatility of energy markets and supporting the Group’s growth towards an ever more efficient and responsible business model.”

The programme is nearing completion, with 64% of total capacity already operational and the remainder scheduled for completion by the end of the year. While focused primarily on Leonardo’s Italian sites, the initiative also includes similar projects at Group sites in Poland, the UK and the United States.

NOLA AND THE LED LIGHTING FULL POTENTIAL PROGRAMME

Among the most significant projects is the installation at the Nola site near Naples, where a 9.8 MW photovoltaic plant has been built, one of the largest industrial installations of its kind in Italy. It meets approximately 24% of the site’s energy requirements, equivalent to the annual consumption of more than 4,000 households, and comprises over 24,000 panels across a gross area of approximately 80,000 square metres.

In parallel, Leonardo’s LED Lighting Full Potential programme has been completed with the installation of approximately 125,000 high-efficiency LED lighting fixtures, representing a total investment of around €31 million. The initiative is expected to deliver energy savings equivalent to 7% of the Group’s Italian energy consumption and to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 10,000 tonnes per year, as well as improving visual comfort and working conditions.

Note: Leonardo said its commitment to energy self-generation and efficiency also extends to its supply chain through training and support initiatives, in line with decarbonisation targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
