ECOJET ELECTRIC AIRLINE PROJECT ENTERS LIQUIDATION

Scotland-based EcoJet Airlines enters liquidation after failing to secure funding for its planned electric passenger operations.

Scottish startup unable to secure funding to advance operations

EcoJet Airlines, a Scotland-based startup aiming to launch passenger flights using electric propulsion, has entered voluntary liquidation after failing to secure the funding required to progress the project.

The company, backed by green energy group Ecotricity, was established in 2023 with the objective of developing a fully electric airline.

FUNDING SHORTFALL HALTS DEVELOPMENT

Despite outlining plans for future passenger operations, EcoJet did not reach the stage of commercial service.

Documents filed with Edinburgh Sheriff Court confirm that the company’s board elected to cease operations following unsuccessful efforts to raise approximately $26.8 million in additional capital.

CONCEPT DID NOT REACH OPERATIONAL PHASE

The project was positioned around the adoption of electric propulsion technology for short-haul passenger transport.

However, the airline remained in the development phase, with no aircraft entering operational service prior to the liquidation decision.

SECTOR CONTEXT

The closure highlights the financial and technical barriers facing electric aviation startups, particularly those attempting to move from concept to certified commercial operations.

While development of electric propulsion systems continues across the sector, the transition to airline-scale deployment remains dependent on certification progress, infrastructure readiness, and sustained capital investment.

MARKET SIGNAL

EcoJet’s liquidation reflects a broader industry pattern in which early-stage electric aviation concepts face increasing pressure to demonstrate viable business models alongside technological readiness.
